CARABAO CUP QUARTER FINALS

This week saw the return of domestic football, in the Carabao Cup round of 16. A surprising number of returnees from the World Cup played some part in the matches, 6 of them getting on the scoresheet, including Marcus Rashford and Christian Eriksen for Manchester United, and Nathan Ake for Manchester City in their thrilling 3-2 victory over Liverpool.

The Quarter Finals will comprise seven teams from the Premier League, plus the team currently sitting 18th in League One – Charlton Athletic. Inevitably every team wanted to be drawn against Charlton at home, and the lucky ones this time round are Manchester United.

In the other games, Newcastle will host Leicester, Wolves will cross the Midlands to face Nottingham Forest, and Manchester City visit Southampton – slap bang between an FA Cup tie against Chelsea and a Premier League trip to Old Trafford. It’s a good job Pep Guardiola has a big squad to choose from, as they’re sure to be needed during a busy run of fixtures in January.

Manchester United v Charlton Athletic

Manchester United will be clear favourites to book their place in the semi finals, taking on a team whose new manager Dean Holden was born a stone’s throw from Old Trafford. The two sides met 16 times in the Premier League, between 1998 and Charlton’s relegation in 2007, United winning 14 of these fixtures, the other two ending in draws, so it’s fair to say the omens are not good for a giant killing. In fact you need to go back 33 years to find the last time Charlton beat United – a 2-0 win at Selhurst Park in the old First Division.
