The Return of the Premier League

Chelsea Vs Bournemouth

On December 27th, when the Qatar World Cup will be a fading memory, Chelsea’s team of international stars – skin still glowing from their time in the Arabian sun – will welcome Bournemouth to Stamford Bridge, as the Premier League season resumes. This will be only the 18th time the two sides have met in competitive matches, Chelsea having won 11 of these games to Bournemouth’s 5. But if the visitors need something positive to grab hold of, they have won two of the last three Premier League ties at Stamford Bridge, the first of which will live long in the memory of Cherries supporters.

On January 31st 2018, Eddie Howe took his side up the M3 to West London to face Antonio Conte’s reigning Champions. Nobody gave the visitors much hope, but three goals in 15 second half minutes brought Chelsea to their knees. Even the introduction of World Cup Winner Cesc Fabregas and 17 year old debutant Callum Hudson-Odoi had little impact. Two of the players on the scoresheet that day are representing their countries in Qatar –
England’s Callum Wilson, now at Newcastle, and Manchester City’s Nathan Ake, part of the Netherlands World Cup Squad.

As with 2018, Chelsea will be hot favourites to take the three points, but if either side is likely to face a World Cup hangover, it’s the hosts. Manchester United Vs Nottingham Forest

At 8:00pm on December 27th, Manchester United welcome another newly promoted side to Old Trafford. It will be the first time Nottingham Forest have visited the Theatre of Dreams since Boxing Day 1998, when Norwegian defender Ronny Johnsen scored twice in a 3-0 win for United; and the first time the two sides have met at all since the Red Devils won 8-1 at the City Ground in February 1999, a game in which super-sub Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came off the bench to score four times in the last 10 minutes of the match.

The last time Forest won at Old Trafford was in a badtempered game in 1994, in which 8 players were booked (including United’s captain, the former Forest player Roy Keane), and the visitors’ team included a player called Haaland… Goals from Stan Collymore and Stuart Pearce were enough to secure the three points that day.

Forest will be hoping that United’s World Cup contingent return to the North West a little jaded after their experience in the Middle East, but with Steve Cooper’s side having spent most of the season in the bottom 3, everything points towards a home win and a late Christmas present for Erik Ten Hag.
