What is the Rugby League Ashes?

After a 22-year hiatus, one of the fiercest rivalries in sport is back. The Lions and the Kangaroos will reignite their legendary clash in a three-Test Match Series for the first time since 2003. The series begins at the iconic Wembley Stadium on 25th October 2025, setting the stage for a historic return of the Rugby League Ashes.

Tickets and hospitality packages have been secured up at a record-breaking pace following the announcement of the Ashes’ highly anticipated return. Reflecting the extraordinary demand, all three host venues boast capacities of at least 50,000, a testament to the tournament’s appeal and its stature on the global sporting stage.

When was the last Rugby Ashes?

The most recent Ashes series took place in 2003, with Australia continuing its long-standing dominance by winning all three Tests against Great Britain. Despite the 3-0 series sweep, the matches were far from one-sided.

Australia had to come from behind in each Test and secured victory by no more than a single converted try in every game. This made the 2003 series arguably the closest Ashes contest since 1974, despite the final scoreline suggesting otherwise.

Where will it be played?

The sides will play Test matches on three successive Saturdays. With the series kicking off at Wembley on 25 October. Followed up with a debut for Rugby at Everton’s new Bromley-Moore Dock stadium on 1 November, and then at the home of the Leeds Rhinos, Headingley Stadium on 8 November.

Who will be lifting the trophies?

Since their first clash in 1908/09, the Lions and the Kangaroos have faced off 39 times, with Australia narrowly leading the head-to-head at 20 wins to 19. But while the rivalry has remained tight on the head to head, the Ashes trophy has told a different story favourites Australia has held onto it since 1973. That’s 51 years of heartbreak for England.

All eyes will turn to Headingley Stadium on 8th November, where the final Test and trophy lift will decide whether the wait continues.
