UEFA Semi Finals: Champions, Europa & Conference League Preview

Arsenal April 22, 2025 3 min read.
For the first time since 2021, all four of England’s biggest clubs, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, and Manchester United have reached the semi-finals of their respective European competitions.

It’s been a dramatic ride so far, from Manchester United’s wild 7-6 aggregate victory to Arsenal’s commanding 5-1 display. Now, with just one step left before the finals, the stage is set and the stories are taking shape. Read on as we dive into the key narratives ahead of the semi-finals.

Arsenal

Arteta’s side have reached only the third UEFA Champions League semi-final in the club’s history .

After eliminating 15-time Champions League winners Real Madrid, Arsenal will be confident they can finally break their European curse and secure Europes elite trophy for the first time. They’ve played 199 Champions League matches, more than any other club without winning the competition.

Now, the road to Munich continues at the Emirates, where Arsenal will face Paris Saint-Germain in a semi-final clash. Luis Enrique’s side struggled against the Gunners in the league phase, falling to a 2-0 defeat in London. History isn’t on PSG’s side either, they’ve never beaten Arsenal in five attempts, drawing three and losing two.

According to Opta, Arsenal are currently favourites to win the tournament with a 28.7% chance, just ahead of Inter Milan at 25.5%.

Chelsea

Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea have mostly made light work of the Conference League group stages, but things have started to wobble when it matters most.

Now they’re up against Djurgården, a team sitting 60 places below them in UEFA’s coefficient rankings, but given recent form, it’s far from a easy win.

Goals have dried up at the worst possible time. Cole Palmer hasn’t found the net in 15 games, Nicolas Jackson’s drought has stretched to 12, and £52 million signing Christopher Nkunku hasn’t scored in his last eight. For a side with so much youthful attacking talent, the lack of cutting edge is a real concern.

Still, there’s plenty on the line. Winning the Conference League would see Chelsea complete the set of major domestic and European honours, something no other English club has done. It would also guarantee them a Europa League spot next season. And if they can climb into the Premier League’s top five, there’s still a shot at Champions League football too, thanks to UEFA co-efficient rankings.

Manchester United

In the face of their domestic cup and league form, Manchester United are the only unbeaten side throughout all UEFA competitions.

Despite Amorim Red’s trailing in the 119 minute to Olympique Lyon, Mainoo and Maguire clinched a win in the finals minutes becoming the first team to score twice in the 119th minute and The first match in European football history to see five goals scored in extra-time.

At the time of writing, Ernesto Valverde Basque men currently have a higher chance of winning the competition over the Manchester side according to Opta. Should the Spanish side advance at United’s expense they would play the final in their home stadium providing an advantage to either Bødo/Glimt or Tottenham Hotspur.

For Manchester United, the ambition is not just to relive the glory of 2017, when José Mourinho guided them to Europa League triumph, but secure Champions League football especially as the side have no other route at the moment.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur have reached their first European semi-final since that night in Amsterdam.
At the start of his tenure, Ange Postecoglou declared that he always wins in his second season. With the Europa League now their only remaining chance at silverware, the pressure is on the Australian to make good on his words.

Spurs showed grit with a comeback win in Frankfurt, and now set their sights on the next stage of their European campaign against Bodø/Glimt’s fairytale journey continues. The Norwegian side stunned Lazio, progressing on penalties to reach uncharted heights. Becoming the first Norwegian side to reach the semi finals ever.

According to Opta, Tottenham are now tournament favourites, holding a 34.9% chance of lifting the Europa League, their run keeps gathering believers, with hopes of a first European trophy since 1984 steadily growing.
