Last season Arsenal exited the Champions League at the hands of eventual winners PSG, falling 3-1 on aggregate. This summer, however, Mikel Arteta has been heavily backed in the transfer market, with a net spend of £267m, the highest in the league. Reinforcements such as Martín Zubimendi, Viktor Gyökeres and Eberechi Eze have added depth and quality, leaving the manager with little margin for excuses as he chases Arsenal’s first trophy in five years.

The standout fixture of the group stage will be their clash with Bayern Munich, a tie that has historically haunted the Gunners. Across previous meetings, Arsenal have conceded 18 goals while netting just six in return. With this match arriving so early in the Champions League campaign, it promises to be the perfect litmus test for Arteta’s side and their seasons ambitions.

After lifting the 2025 Europa Conference League, Chelsea became the first club to win every major UEFA competition: the Champions League, Europa League, Europa Conference League, and Super Cup. They added further silverware in the summer, with Enzo Maresca guiding them to the FIFA Club World Cup, as the Blues continue to cement their continental supremacy.

Chelsea’s featured fixture will be against Barcelona, a match previously steeped in drama. The most infamous meeting came in 2009, when a 1-1 draw saw Barça progress to the final on away goals, amid furious Chelsea protests over several penalty appeals waved away by referee Tom Henning Øvrebø.

Across 14 encounters between 2000 and 2018, the record remains finely balanced: four wins each and six draws. With both sides now seeking to re-establish themselves amongst Europe’s elite.

FSG kept spending to a minimum during Arne Slot’s first season, investing just £35m. But after lifting the Premier League title last campaign, Liverpool have backed their manager with £218.4m in reinforcements. Arrivals include Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Etitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, to name a few signalling clear intent to strengthen on all fronts.

The frontline is undeniably one of the best in the league. Isak now joins Mohamed Salah, the Premier League’s two most prolific goal contributors last season, combining for 76 goals and assists. Expectations, both inside the club and across the fanbase, could not be higher.

The standout clash of the group stage sees Real Madrid return to Anfield, a fixture that has become a familiar battleground, with the two clubs meeting six times in the past seven years, including the 2018 Champions League final. This time, however, the narrative will be on former Reds Xabi Alonso and Trent Alexander-Arnold make their highly anticipated returns.

Last season Manchester City struggled to adapt to the new Champions League format, eventually finding themselves in the play-off route where they were paired with none other than Real Madrid. Their early exit was seen as a huge upset, with Pep Guardiola since overseeing a summer rebuild aimed at refreshing an ageing squad. New arrivals include Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki and Rayan Aït-Nouri, were all brought in ahead of the Club World Cup to inject much-needed youth and energy, especially in the midfield.

Remarkably, City also strengthened between the posts, spending £65m to secure Champions League winner Gianluigi Donnarumma alongside Burnley’s highly rated James Trafford. The two young keepers will be fighting it out for the Manchester City no.1 shirt moving forward.

Manchester City’s campaign begins with a huge tie against Serie A champions Napoli, a clash made even more intriguing by the return of Kevin De Bruyne to the Etihad. The Belgian playmaker, a club legend after a decade of service in which he lifted the Champions League, six Premier League titles, five League Cups and two FA Cups, will now line up against his former side in what promises to be a captivating return to the Etihad.

Tottenham Hotspur ended their 17-year wait for silverware with a Europa League final victory over Manchester United at the San Mamés, Bilbao. Now, with the burden off their shoulders, Spurs will look to build further momentum on Europe’s biggest stage.

The group stage offers Spurs a set of familiar opponents in Eintracht Frankfurt, Bodø/Glimt and Monaco all sides they have all faced in recent years. The standout tie, however, will be the rematch with PSG. Having met only once before, in the UEFA Super Cup earlier this year, this clash in Paris will mark Spurs’ first away trip to the French capital. For the travelling fans, it promises to be an unforgettable night under the UCL lights.
