Arsenal v Aston Villa

The end of the Premier League football season is in sight, and we’re no clearer as to who will be lifting the famous trophy on May 19th. Although it’s now clearly a three-horse race to the finish line, any of the top flight clubs can still have a say in who wins the title, with some huge clashes still to be played.

One of the most intriguing fixtures sees Unai Emery return to Arsenal with his Aston Villa side for a Super Sunday 4:30pm clash on April 14th. Although his time at the Emirates wasn’t a particularly happy one, the Spaniard has more than proved his worth during his time in the West Midlands, and he’ll like nothing more than to come away from North London with the points, to potentially derail compatriot Mikel Arteta’s run-in.

During Emery’s time in London, he only came up against Villa once, with Arsenal twice coming from behind to secure a 3-2 victory in September 2019. On the scoresheet that day for Arsenal was Calum Chambers, who now plies his trade at Villa Park.

Arsenal and Villa are historically two of the titans of English football, and have faced each other more than 200 times since their first match in 1904. In the 21st century, Arsenal have clearly had the better of the head-to-heads, winning 4 of the last 5 Premier League meetings between the sides, including a thrilling 4-2 win at Villa Park in February 2023, courtesy of two goals in injury time. But Villa will be hoping to do the double over the Gunners for the first time since 2020/21, following John McGinn’s winner in the reverse fixture back in December.
