Aston Villa Fixture
Aston Villa v Newcastle 30th January

Rounding off their January fixtures, Aston Villa host Newcastle United on Tuesday January 30th at 8:15pm, in a mouthwatering clash under the Villa Park lights. Come and enjoy the evening with us, experiencing the wonderful Villa Park hospitality.

Top 4 Ambitions

These two clubs, more than any other right now, embody the belief that with hard work, strong management and good player recruitment, breaking into the Premier League’s top 4 is not an unrealistic ambition. Last season it appeared that the Toon Army, with their new investors behind them, were a little way ahead of Villa – they secured Champions League qualification at the end of the 2022/23 season; while the Midlands side finished ten points and three places back, to secure a place in the Europa Conference League. This might be regarded as the poor relation of the bigger two European tournaments, but for Villa fans a return to any European competition after a long hiatus is a welcome addition to the domestic season. Furthermore, in Unai Emery they have a manager whose success in Europe is something special – he led Sevilla to the Europa League title three times, Villarreal on one occasion, and finished runners-up in 2019 during his brief spell with Arsenal.

The Villa clash rounds off what looks on paper to be a challenging month for Eddie Howe’s side, whose other games in January are an away clash at Anfield, and a home game against Champions Manchester City. Depending on how these two matches go, there could be a lot riding on the trip to Villa Park. If it’s anything like the first two meetings between the sides at the back end of the 19th century, the crowd will be in for a real treat – Villa trounced their opponents 7-1
and then 5-1 in the FA Cup in 1895 and 1897. In the modern era, Newcastle have had the edge over Villa, including a 6-0 win at St James’ Park in the second match of the 2010/11 season, which included a hat-trick from Andy Carroll, after Villa’s John Carew had missed a penalty with the score at 0-0. Newcastle also started the current season flying with a 5-1 victory over the Villa, although all involved with in Aston have enjoyed a much better first half to the season compared to the Geordie rivals.

Home Advantage

Villa supporters might be heartened to know that over the last few years, victory has more often than not gone to the home team. In fact, Villa have beaten Newcastle at Villa Park in each of the last 4 Premier League seasons, without conceding a single goal. At the end of last season, Villa’s 3-0 win was the first time since 1998 that the club had won five consecutive games in the top flight, and moved them up to 6th in the table. The in-form Ollie Watkins scored his 10th and 11th goals in a breath-taking 12 game run, after Jacob Ramsey’s
opener had set Villa on their way.

It’s got all the makings of a wonderful match up between two teams on the up in the Premier League, and two managers who are at the top of their games.
