Europa League 2025-26: Fixture Release

Aston Villa September 2, 2025 2 min read.

The 55th season of the UEFA Europa League returns, with Aston Villa among the 36 clubs competing in 2025-26 iteration. The season’s final will be staged at the Beşiktaş Stadium, which also hosted the 2019 UEFA Super Cup Final between Liverpool and Chelsea, which the Reds won on penalties.

This Europa League season highlights the third successive season Aston Villa has competed in Europe, having previously competed in the Europa Conference League, Champions League, and now the Europa League. A major achievement for the Unai Emery who took over from Steven Gerrard’s reign when they languished in 16th place.

The previous winners, Tottenham Hotspur, ended their 17-year wait for silverware by defeating Rúben Amorim’s Manchester United at San Mamés in Bilbao. It’s a feat Aston Villa will be eager to emulate, especially after narrowly missing out on Champions League qualification to Newcastle United on the final day of the season.

The 2025-26 Europa League fixtures were confirmed on the 29th August. Laying out the path for all clubs as they aim to reach the next stage of the competition.

All teams will play eight games within the Europa League: League Phase. Four at home and four away. All teams will play eight separate clubs. Which differs from the previous format. Which saw teams face off against three teams twice.

One of the games to watch of the league phase will come against Bologna. A side in which the Villa met for the first time in 2024 during the Champions League: league phase, in which Unai Emery’s side came out 2-0 winners. Now, the claret and blue will be seeking to maintain their 100% record against the Italian side and kick-off their campaign with three points.

Other highlights include returning to Rotterdam, one of the scenes of the club’s greatest night and a reunion with Jhon Duran, their second most expensive departure who now plays for Turkish side Fenerbahce.

However, Villa’s history in the Europa League currently comprises of just two campaigns, with both having ended in the qualifying round, meaning the fore coming games will be the first time that the Villa have competed in the league phase or group stages round.

Although their Europa League inexperience will be leveraged by Spanish coach Unai Emery, a four time Europa League winner. Emery won three titles with Sevilla in as many years between 2014-16, before clinching his fourth with Villarreal in 2021. Making the Spaniard the most successful manager in the competition.

Nonetheless, Unai Emery side has struggled in the opening dates of this season, with the side failing to score within the opening four fixtures of the Premier League. This issue was exacerbated by their lack of squad depth, an issue that only continued to be highlighted come the commencing of the European competitions. It remains to be seen whether the deadline day signings of Victor Lindelof, Jadon Sancho and Harvey Elliot will paper over the cracks and play an important role in the season to come.
