Who’s in the Europa League Final?

Manchester United will face Tottenham Hotspur in the 54th edition of the UEFA Europa League, set to take place at the Estadio de San Mamés on May 21st, 2025.

This clash marks the first all-English Europa League final since Chelsea’s 4-0 victory over Arsenal in 2019, and notably, the first time in history that two bottom-half Premier League teams have contested the final of this competition.

Both United and Spurs have endured turbulent domestic seasons, plagued by injuries and the physical toll of demanding tactical systems under managers Rúben Amorim and Ange Postecoglou, respectively.

Yet this final presents a rare opportunity, a shot at European trophy and a backdoor return to the Champions League, regardless of league standings.

Manchester United

Manchester United remains the only unbeaten side across all European competitions this season. Across a 14-match Europa League campaign, the Red Devils have notched nine wins and five draws, putting them just one win away from lifting the trophy.

Before their semi-final clash with Athletic Bilbao, United were considered third favourites behind domestic rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Spanish giants. But after defeating the Basque side, Rúben Amorim’s men are now the firm favourites, with Opta giving them a 52.4% chance of winning, compared to Tottenham’s 43.2%.

Despite the momentum, manager Rúben Amorim insists that Europa League success won’t “save the season”, but concedes that it “could change a lot of things in our club.”
Highlighting that this final is not just about silverware.

The last Manchester United manager to win a trophy in their first season was José Mourinho who claimed the Europa League in 2017.

Although victory in the final would secure an additional £10.95 million in prize money, adding to the £9.3 million already earned through performance bonuses this season.

Winning would secure Manchester United’s first trophy since 2024 and a crucial route back into the Champions League, unlocking an estimated £70 million in revenue, even if the team fails to progress beyond the group stage.

That potential windfall could shape the club’s financial strategy this summer. United have operated under tighter financial constraints recently, with a clear pivot toward a long-term, sustainable model with figures like technical director Jason Wilcox developing and implementing a game model which will aid in the potential recruitment going forward.

Alongside the possibility income. There’s also a fitness boost for Amorim, with Mason MountAmad Diallo, and Matthijs de Ligt potentially returning from injury and pushing to be match-fit ahead of what in this £100 million final.

For United’s players, this isn’t just another match. It’s the most important fixture of the season, with consequences that extend far beyond the game. A win could re-establish Manchester United’s place among Europe’s elite competition and aid in the club’s rebuilding efforts.

Tottenham Hotspur

This final marks Tottenham’s first European final appearance since the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League showdown with Liverpool, a painful night they’ll hope to overwrite with glory over another domestic rival.

Tottenham Hotspur heads into this tie with a psychological edge Manchester United haven’t beaten Spurs since October 2022, a run stretching six games (4 losses, 2 draws).

Manager Ange Postecoglou has previously highlighted that during his prior tenures, the Aussie tended to secure silverware in their second season.

This trophy remains final opportunity for the Australian to keep to his promises and end Spurs’ 17-year trophy drought.

There’s currently rumours that this could be one of Postecoglou’s final games at the helm, regardless of the outcome. His stint has been a mixed bag, his demanding, high-intensity football exposed the squad’s physical limits early on, triggering a wave of injuries that hampered consistency causing the North London side to slump into the bottom half of the table.

Now, with hopes of having Heung-Min SonDominic Solanke, and Lucas Bergvall fit and firing, Postecoglou is hoping to lift more then a trophy but delivering Spurs their first-ever Europa League title, and their first trophy since 2008.

If Australian was to win they would be the first Tottenham Hotspur manager to win a European trophy since Keith Burkinshaw’s UEFA Cup win in 1983-84. 40 years later.
