What to expect: FA Cup Final

Crystal Palace April 28, 2025 3 min read.

Who’s in the FA Cup Final?

Crystal Palace have advanced into their first cup final since 2016 defeating Champions League Semi-Finalists Aston Vila 3-0. Meanwhile Manchester City were clinical against a Nottingham Forest side, who managed to hit the post three times in the half.

Crystal Palace will now face Manchester City in the Emirates FA Cup Final on the 17th May 2025 at Wembley Stadium.

Manchester City

Nottingham Forest would have had considered themselves favourites against this Manchester City earlier in the season, especially as the Tricky Trees already pulled up all the stumps against the Cityzen’s in March. A 1-0 victory encapsulating Forest’s ability to defend deep, and hit on the break.

Though on the biggest stage at Wembley, Forest will be counting themselves misfortunate. With Gibbs White and Elanga both hitting the post within moments of each other. Alas, Manchester City advance after two well delivered goals at opportune moments in the game.

With Pep Guardiola mentioning:

“Of course we are lucky we cannot deny that, they had chances. But apart form the actions they had, the game in general was really good play. Really pleased to be in the final again.”

The current-Premier League Champions will be now facing Oliver Glasner’s Eagles in the final on May 17th. A final which will surprisingly mean a lot to the Sky Blues. Pep Guaridola has not gone without silverware since 2016/17, and now this FA Cup Final represents his last opportunity of maintaining that record.

In a season that has ultimately been disappointing, Manchester City will be more than quietly optimistic.

In the last 23 games, The Sky Blues have only lost three games to the London side. Although they will be missing their Talisman Erling Haaland who is currently out with an ankle injury for the next few weeks.

Crystal Palace

Palace swept away the Unai Emery sides with sides mid-block in their 3-4-3 despite their 29% possession. The East London side capitalised on their chances against Aston Villa, even after Mateta’s missed penalty.

Unai Emery will be hating the sight of Oliver Glasner with his side seemingly becoming the Spaniard’s Achilles Heel. The Eagles has not lost against his side in the Premier League.

Despite their poor start to the year, Chairman Steve Parish said “never had any doubt” regarding the head coach Oliver Glasner.

Oliver Glasner is now one win away from making history for Crystal Palace, the Austrian manager has won a Europa League at Eintracht Frankfurt, and an Austrian Second Division trophy. Although, if Glasner was to win against Manchester City on May 17th. The FA Cup would stand apart.

Crystal Palace in their entire history have never won a major trophy, ending a 115 year drought.

Considering this is one of the best Crystal Palace sides in recent history with the likes of Eze, Adam Wharton, and Ismaïla Sarr. Glasner will be wanting to capitalise on their talented squad which on their day has taken points off of the likes of Arsenal, Aston Villa and more.

The Eagles will learn from their previous time at Wembley, in which they faced a Manchester United side taken the reds to Extra Time before a Lingard goal which came in the 110th minute. With the side more tactically adept, alongside side Glasner’s final experience they’ll be hopeful of overcoming Pep Guardiola’s side.

Not only would the FA Cup see the Eagles win their first major trophy but the win would qualify the South London side for Europa League football for the first time in their history.

Although, it is still possible for the side qualify via the Premier League. Glasner’s side currently sit 6 points off 8th spot which would be enough to secure some form of European football at the time of writing.

Regardless of the result it has been a season to remember for the side based in South London.
