Tottenham Hotspur Claim European Triumph in Bilbao

Tottenham Hotspur have defeated Manchester United 1-0 to win the Europa League on Wednesday 21st May in the Basque region of Spain, Bilbao.

It’s one of the biggest moments in Spurs’ history with the win securing the Lillywhites their first trophy in 17 years and their first European trophy since 1984, 41 years ago.

This win goes against pre-conceived conceptions regarding “the history of Tottenham”. Spurs fans, of the past have been the punchline in sport but now that has switched. Many speculating whether Tottenham Hotspur have had a better season than Arsenal.

Despite this being a clash of 16th vs 17th. Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur. A sloppy performance was expected. But Tottenham were the efficient of the two. Three shots. 27 per cent possession. 115 passes.

All bear fruits with a 42nd minute goal that saw a whipped Pape Sarr cross which sought to pick out Brennan Johnson, eventually deflecting off of Manchester United’s impromptu centre-back Luke Shaw. Again followed by slight deflection off of Brennan Johnson before the ball ending up bouncing past goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Throughout the remaining match, Manchester United pressed and dominated against Spurs, who were happy with the one-nil lead and comfortable with sitting back. Displaying their defensive brilliance with Micky Van de Ven providing an athletic goal line clearance from a Højlund header.

Despite Manchester United’s dramatic push it was to no avail, the Red Devils only registering 1.06 xG to Tottenham Hotspur’s 1.0 xG come the 90th minute.

By winning the competition, Tottenham have found themselves qualified for the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League. Meaning the London outfit will be joining FIVE other Premier League clubs amongst Europe’s Elite.

Ange’s side will also play in the Super Cup on the 13th August at the Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy against the winner of the Champions League (Either one of Inter Milan or Paris Saint German)

Prior to the win, Postecoglou has been heavily criticised throughout this season for his statement which came after a defeat to their bitter rivals Arsenal in September 2024.

“I don’t usually win things… I always win things in my second year. Nothing has changed,”

The Australian provided much needed hope throughout the season with the side being under pressure with the club 17th in the Premier League.

Despite the win there remains speculation whether the London side will stick with their Aussie manager.

When asked about his future on TNT Sports, Postecoglou said: “Whatever happens, happens. We’re still building this team. My thought process is trying to build a team that can be successful for four, five, six years. But I’m the manager of the football club, that decision is not in my hands.”

Manchester United had a similar predicament last season with the side debating whether they stick with their previous manger Erik Ten Hag after the Dutchmen defeated Manchester City 2-1 in the FA Cup final. Eventually departing ways after a string of poor performances come October.

Which ever the call, Tottenham Hotspur have been continually linked to other managers such as the likes of current Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola. Who has developed his youthful squad and followed up with an impressive 2024/25 campaign.

In spite of the rumours Tottenham Hotspur will have to spend in the summer to aid in their Champions League and domestic efforts. As this season saw a multitude of key players miss out due to injuries. Who ever they chose to back, Levy and the board must invest.

Spurs’ final game of the Premier League season is on Sunday against Brighton.
