The History of Wembley

Wembley Stadium, located in London, is one of the most iconic sporting venues in the world. The original stadium, known as the Empire Stadium, was built in 1923 and quickly became synonymous with English football. Its debut event, the 1923 FA Cup Final famously hosted 126,067 people. The largest event hosted at the venue ever, quickly earning it famed status. Thus, making the stadium’s twin towers a symbol of national pride.

Since then, Wembley Stadium has become home to the biggest events in sport and beyond. Known for its status as England’s National stadium, its hosted the key events which shaped our nation today from Bobby Moore lifting the 1966 World Cup and Leah Williamson leading England to Euro 2022 glory, to the heartbreaks of Euro 96′ and Euro 2020.

Beyond football, Wembley has been the stage for countless iconic moments from the 1948 and 2012 Summer Olympics to the 1995 Rugby League World Cup Final. It’s also cemented its status as a music mecca, hosting legends like Queen, Michael Jackson, and Elton John.

Near the turn of the century, the old stadium had become beyond repair. It was demolished 2003 and replaced by a state-of-the-art venue, opening again in 2007. The new Wembley features a prominent 133-metre arch, visible throughout London, and seats 90,000 making it the largest stadium in the UK and the second largest in Europe.

Now, the stadium has evolved in a truly multipurpose coliseum, no longer just the home of football, it’s a global stage. From hosting state-side visitors from the NFL to transforming into a grand theatre for WrestleMania. Wembley is home to it all.
