Champions League Round Up After R2

The new look Champions League is up and running, and the format has already thrown up some interesting, and unexpected results. The two Spanish giants, Barcelona and Real Madrid have already come unstuck against French opposition – losing to Monaco and Lille respectively.

But the biggest shock so far came in the West Midlands, where Aston Villa beat Bayern Munich 1-0, evoking memories of their European Cup triumph against the same club in Rotterdam 42 years ago. Following their win at Young Boys in the opening week of the competition, Villa are one of 7 teams out of the 36 to have collected maximum points from the first two games, and although it’s very early days, the fans are already dreaming of reaching the knockout stages.

Manchester City moved on from their goalless draw with Inter Milan in week one with a comprehensive win away at Slovan Bratislava; Arne Slot’s Liverpool have seen off two Italian sides – Bologna at home, plus a superb 3-1 win at the San Siro against AC Milan; while Arsenal bounced back from a disappointing draw with another Italian side, Atalanta, to beat Paris Saint German 2-0 at the Emirates.

On Wednesday 23rd October, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City will play Czech side Sparta Prague at the Etihad.
