Everton vs Liverpool 24th April
Everton v Liverpool
It’s been a season of stark contrasts between Merseyside’s two Premier League clubs. Liverpool have been battling all season for the Premier League title, a fitting farewell to Jurgen Klopp as he calls time after 9 years at the club; Everton however have faced a very different challenge, a positive start to the season derailed by having to deal with points being docked, points being returned and nobody really having a clue what algorithms are being used to determine any of these decisions!
For the most part Sean Dyche has managed to keep his team out of the bottom three, despite enduring the club’s worst run of results in their Premier League history.
Derby days on Merseyside are a unique beast, particularly under floodlights. And when Liverpool make the short journey across Stanley Park on Wednesday 24th April for an 8pm kick off, they’ll be in no doubt that a hostile atmosphere awaits them. It’s a massive game for both the Blues and the Reds, with glittering prizes potentially awaiting the victors – whether that’s a step towards the Premier League title, or simply a step towards survival in the top flight, the rewards are huge.
Everton have been in shadow of their neighbours for most of their history, and have only won one derby fixture in the last 15 years, when Carlo Ancelotti masterminded a 2-0 victory at Anfield, so the betting man would be hard pressed to predict anything but an away win this time around. But football is a strange game, and with all the fanfare surrounding Klopp’s imminent departure it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if things don’t go according to form.
It promises to be an intriguing battle – one of the last to take place at Goodison Park before the opening of the new Bramley Moore Dock stadium.
