Round of 16 Draw – 21st February 2025

All the Champions, Europa, and Conference League Round of 16 draws have been made and the dates have now been confirmed.

The remaining Premier League sides in the competitions advanced straight into the Round of 16, meaning that they are seeded, and will play the second leg of the draws at home.

The six clubs fixtures will be played on either the 12th/13th March. Based on their respective competition.

The Round of 16 draw has been made today across all UEFA competitions and is as follows:

Champions League

  • Liverpool v Paris Saint Germain – 12th March
  • Arsenal v PSV Eindhoven – 13th March
  • Aston Villa v Club Brugge – 13th March

Europa League

  • Tottenham Hotspurs v AZ Alkmaar – 14th March
  • Manchester United v Real Sociedad – 14th March

Conference League

  • Chelsea v Copenhagen FC – 14th March

Why is it important that all teams progress?

Two leagues in Europe will be rewarded with an extra Champions League spot in the 25/26 season depending on the performance of their clubs in their respective European competitions.

UEFA calculates which two leagues will be rewarded with an extra Champions League place by adding up coefficient points based on the performances of clubs from each league across the Champions League, Europa League and UEFA Conference League.

Last season the beneficiary of the co-efficiency were the German club Borussia Dortmund and French side Stade Brest.

Every win for a club in any of UEFA’s club competitions this season earns each league two points, while a draw gets one point, and there are no points for defeat.

On top of that, bonus points are awarded according to where each club finish in their European league table. These are weighted according to the competition. For example, finishing top of the table in the Champions League gets you 12 bonus points, while finishing top of the Europa League gets you six, and the top team in the Conference League get four.

Additional bonus points are awarded for reaching each round from the last 16 onwards. These are also weighted according to the competition.

How do we compare to other leagues this season?

Across all the UEFA competitions The Premier League have had their 6 of the original 7 clubs remain in their respective competitions. The remaining teams can continually gain points for their nations co-efficient

While Spain also has 6 clubs remaining with Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid both facing off in the R16 – Spanish clubs are guaranteed to reduce to 5 clubs in UEFA competitions in the next round.

Equally all the Premier League teams are on the same side of the draw, meaning toward the latter stages teams will drop out.

As it stands it would take an unheard of collapse from the English clubs to lose out on the extra qualifying spot. As it stands on the 24th Feb 2025: they currently sit top with 106 points, to Italy’s 93.5.

Second place Italy according to Opta has a 66.9% chance of qualifying compared to Spain’s 31%. The Premier League sits on 99.5%.

Points wise other leagues include Germany with 83.5, and France with 70.22. Leagues gone unmentioned have close to no chance to qualify for the remaining spot.

What does that mean for next season?

Put simply means that the Premier League could have seven teams within the Champions League. The performance of struggling Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspurs could decide whether they can be the sixth club to take the unorthodox route to attend the Champions League.  As both teams are on different sides of the bracket it could potentially come down to the final. While for the seventh club it does require a team outside the top four to win the Champions League. (e.g. Aston Villa)

As the table stands means we could potentially see two Champions League debutants, AFC Bournemouth, and Nottingham Forest. The latter being two-time European Championship winners.

With top of the Premier League table look as diverse as it has ever been with the likes of AFC Bournemouth & previous two time Champions Cup winners Nottingham Forest. Would mean the Champions League wealth being spread throughout the Premier League next season this will allow for the league not only to become more dominant amongst other European Leagues but also more competitive. Potentially introducing a roundtable of clubs entering the UEFA competitions year on year opposed to the top 6 monopoly we have had over the past few seasons.
