Premier League 2024/25 Opening Fixtures

The dust has barely settled on the last campaign, and Euro 2024 is well underway in Germany, but things don’t stop in the world of Premier League football, and the fixtures for the 2024/25 season have been released.

Manchester United and Fulham kick things off on Friday August 16th at Old Trafford, with Eric ten Hag hoping to get the season started on a positive note in front of the home fans. It was a pretty dismal season for United last year, but assuming ten Hag has the full backing of the new ownership, they will be hoping to put a top 4 challenge in next season.

On Saturday 17th Liverpool will travel to newly promoted Ipswich for the lunchtime kick off. After such a long period out of the top flight it’s sure to be an electric atmosphere for Arne Slot’s first competitive match in charge of the visitors.

Last season’s runners-up Arsenal have a home fixture against Wolves, Everton will start their final season at Goodison Park by welcoming Brighton, and their new coach Fabian Hurzeler, who is younger than the Premier League itself, at just 31 years of age!

Southampton’s reward for winning the Championship play offs is the longest journey of the season, away at Newcastle; Saints fans will be joined on the train trip north by their South Coast rivals Bournemouth who are at Nottingham Forest.

The Saturday evening game is a claret and blue clash at the London Stadium between West Ham and Aston Villa. Julen Lopetegui will come up against his Basque compatriot Unai Emery. Although they never played together, the two men were born just 30 miles from each other, and both started their footballing lives in the youth system at Real Sociedad.

The big clash of the weekend comes on Sunday 18th – and I’m not talking about the all-London meeting between Brentford and Crystal Palace. Off the back of his 4th successive Premier League title, Pep Guardiola will be reunited with one of his proteges, Enzo Maresca – the latest occupant of the Chelsea managerial hotseat. It’s an intriguing fixture so early in the season, but what an opportunity for Maresca to ingratiate himself with the West London fanbase.

The final game of the opening weekend sees the side Maresca left to take over at Stamford Bridge, Championship winners Leicester, take on Tottenham in the East Midlands.

Of course, nothing is won or lost in week one of the season, but it’s an opportunity to lay down a marker to your rivals, whether your team is looking to win the title or stay in the league.
