Europa League and Conference Draw
EUROPA LEAGUE AND CONFERENCE
Sixteen teams remain in the Europa League this season – including two from the Premier League: current leaders Arsenal, and Manchester United.
Manchester Utd V Real Betis
United will face Spanish side Real Betis for the first time in a competitive tie, having seen off La Liga leaders Barcelona over two thrilling legs in February. United are beginning to resemble the force they once were, and will fancy themselves to progress to the Quarter Finals of the competition they won in 2017.
United and Betis may not have played each other in competition before, but the two sides did play a friendly at the Spanish side’s home in Seville just a few weeks ago, during the World Cup hiatus. Betis won the game 1-0, although this is is unlikely to have any bearing on Eric ten Hag’s approach to the forthcoming two-legged tie.
The fixture will feature a couple of names well known to people in Manchester – the Spanish side’s Chilean coach Manuel Pellegrini led Manchester City to the Premier League title in 2014, a squad that featured his compatriot Claudio Bravo, the veteran goalkeeper who is also now at Betis. Arsenal V Sporting Lisbon
In North London, Arsenal will take on Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon, the second leg at the Emirates on March 16th. The two sides have faced each other before – in the 1969 Fairs Cup, and the 2018 Europa League – Arsenal unbeaten with two wins and two draws.
The fixture could mean a return to London for Hector Bellerin, who started his professional career at Arsenal, and enjoyed a 10 year spell at the club.
West Ham V AEK Larnaca
In the Europa Conference League, West Ham will face Cypriot side AEK Larnaca for the first time – the prize being a place in the competition’s last 8. The second leg will be played at the London Stadium on March 16th.
