Manchester United confirm new head coach

Manchester United have appointed Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim as their new Head Coach.

Amorim is set to take charge on November 11th after Manchester United allowed him to end his time at the Estádio José Alvalade amicably.  He has signed a three-year contract until June 2027, with United having an option of an additional year.

“Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football,” United said.

The 39-year-old, Amorim joins United after they paid his 10-million-euro release clause. A similar fee paid by Lisbon to complete his move from Braga. As of November 2024, it makes him the 7th and 9th most expensive manager ever.

The fee’s paid are a testament of the faith placed in him as the head coach. Amorim ended the duopoly of dominance between rivals Benfica and Porto, winning two Portuguese titles, their first in 19 years, alongside a league cup – in four full seasons in charge.

Since the beginning of Sporting’s last domestic season, they have conceded just 32 goals and scored 131. United will hope that Amorim can improve upon Ten Hag’s numbers – which saw them concede 69 and score 66 in the same period.

Amorim will bring his 3-4-3 formation, a system built on high possession, flexibility, and fluidity in attacking approaches. Partnered with a strong defence. A system that United hope will see players’ abilities maximised.

with results following almost immediately. Highlighted with his time at Braga, promoted from B Team to 1st Team Manager saw him win 10 of 13 games before being poached to become Sporting’s 5 thmanagers in two years.

During the international break Amorim will be based at Carrington. For the first time in six years, when Amorim visited Carrington during Mourinho’s reign as part of a week’s long internship for his football coaching master’s degree at the University of Lisbon.

This period during the international breaks will be pivotal for the Portuguese coach. The Winter fixture list is a packed and unforgiving time – in which Amorim new squad will be expected to play a game every 3.5 days. This part of the season can define the remainder of the season.

Upon the return of his new players, Amorim’s first three fixtures include travelling to Ipswich to take on Ex-Manchester United coach Kieran McKenna. Before leading out his team at Old Trafford twice within the same week, a Europa League tie against Bodo/Glimt on the 29th November, and Premier League game against Everton on 1st December.
